Overview:
I'm a life long creative and musician who is passionate about playing and teaching music. I first picked up a guitar on my 3rd birthday and have been playing ever since. My father is also a musician and guitarist so I was surrounded by the musical world since I was born. Around the age of 16, I became increasingly serious about learning the technical aspects guitar and decided to study the theoretical side of music on a daily basis. Learning chords, site reading and various scales became a daily routine and I knew music was something I would like to pursue at University. I recently completed my Music degree of Sound Recording Technology at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, at which my primary instrument was the Guitar. I have performed solo and with a band at various venues across the state and am currently in the process of writing new material for my band to be showcased through upcoming recordings and performances.
EXPERIENCE
I first began teaching guitar 8 years ago as part of a community-service component at my local high-school, Sturgis Charter Public School. This is when I first began creating specialized lesson plans for my students which evolved throughout my years as I gained experience with teaching students from various musical backgrounds and skill levels. My students have ranged from complete beginners to life-long guitarists who which to expand their knowledge of more advanced techniques. While emphasizing that practice is paramount towards ensuring improvement, I also know that enjoyment in the material learned and practicing it is equally important and this passion for learning is what I focus on engendering the most within students.
METHODS USED
After establishing the experience level of the student, I will create an appropriate lesson plan. For less experienced students, I will use my own, introductory written exercises and simple guitar riffs to get started. Upon forming the basic skill needed to learn pieces of music, I will either introduce solo repertoire pieces or songs that the student wish to learn while continuing with my pre-written exercises. For more experienced students, I will use Jazz standards from the Real Book and J.S Bach pieces transcribed for guitar as a way to practice more advanced compositions and sight reading if that is something the student is interested in. For highly experienced students, I will draw from examples found in Guthrie Govan's Creative Techniques 1&2 as well as my own, high-level lesson plans that focus on advanced techniques such as tapping, legato and hybrid/sweep/economy picking.
LESSON STYLE
As music is my greatest passion, I find it very rewarding to share this love for the art-form through the education of my students. The most important first step I take is establishing the specific goals for the student to achieve at a pace that applies to the individual and their level of proficiency. I will determine what they want to get out of the lessons and develop the lesson plan from there. If the student doesn't have any specific wishes, I will assume a greater control over the lesson plans. By establishing a lesson trajectory that is tailored for each student, I will figure what inspires them and build upon that with each lesson.
