When beginning teaching I typically assess the learners general attention span, natural strengths, and what is motivating for them. I complete a beginner piano assessment to find out how the learner is with pattern recognition, any previous knowledge they may have, and what type of instruction they respond best to. When I understand the learners least restrictive environment I will choose the type of notation we start with. This can be traditional sheet music, pop chords, or adapted notation that may consist of numbers, letters, and/or colors. Read More

First I try to set goals and learn more about the student (schedules, passions, goals, etc.). Then I focus on the basics. The first lesson almost never results in the ability to play anything because it's so important to avoid practicing with improper technique. First the student must learn hand position, how to support the guitar, how to hold the pick and more before a note can be played. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals I move on to a simple song in the category of music that I know they'd like to focus on. Read More

I like to keep a fun, lighthearted, and exciting mood in my lessons. My priority is keeping students working towards their own goals. I certainly hope to influence those goals, but if the student doesn't have the motivation, no one else can help them. In some ways, I view myself not as a teacher, but as a guide. A student can be their own best teacher, but without guidance and explanation, it is easy to get lost. Read More

My teaching methods are largely dependant on the needs and experience of the student. For begining guitar, bass, and key board students I generally work with several method books, and supply supplimentary materials as required. I believe that each student is unique, and what works for one student might not be sutiable for another. I assess a students learning style and develop lesson plans that emphaisze their strenths, and encourge them to develop. Read More

I began teaching private guitar lessons while I was attending Ohio State University. I was a teaching assistant while in graduate school. During my school days I thought of teaching music simply as a way to earn some money. After completing my college work I became a touring freelance musician, performing with widely-varying artists and an extremely wide range of style and genres. I noticed that, because of the excellent understanding of music I was given, I could easily go from one genre to another effortlessly, while most of the musicians with whom i played seemed to stay within one particular style or feel. For beginners I like to have a method books such as Alfreds or Hal Leonards and occasionally supplement with an easy piece to hold their interest. Its important for them to have something to show as soon as possible. As the student advances, the Mickey Baker books are good for the interested jazz student. And getting them to play simple chord progressions and melodies is a good way to get them off and running . Read More

I believe in cultivating music at a high level from the very start emphasizing that one must listen in order to play. I encourage activities that foster focus and attention to detail. The more deeply one listens ,the richer the musical experience.. I tap into the concept of octave theory utilizing solfege as well as linear concepts on single strings.. For timing and feel I encourage the use of a metronome to solidify rhythm and have come to unlock a method in which to work with the metronome that is not tedious or frustrating.. Read More
