With banjo I usually begin with The Janet Davis banjo book-it has proved to be a great stepping stone into the more valuable Scruggs Books. We begin by learning some key fundamental rolls and then use to play some easy songs. Then we move to the more complex Slides, Pull-offs and hammer-ons and how to blend into the rolls. Every student I've ever taught graduates to the Earl Scruggs looks! Read More

For children I tend to teach songs by The Beatles as standard curriculum, as well as learning to read music proficiently. The things tend to be non-negotiable unless the parent informs me otherwise. For teens and pre-teens reading music is optional as well as the types of songs you wish to learn or the theory you wish to learn. That's just a general overview, along the way we learn all types of riffs, vamps, chords, scales, etc., to which we follow my standard development method, but never neglecting your own personal interests in music. Helping a student develop his or her own musical voice is my ultimate goal, so crafting our lessons in a way that helps achieve this is how I approach teaching. I believe that students learn best in a nurturing environment where they can feel free to experiment and be free from judgment. I help students define a goal and work towards it in a relaxed but confident and consistent manner. Read More

I actually have my own teaching method mixed in with the way I learned how to play guitar. I learned by learning basic scales and chord shapes. I try to be as interseting as possible so the student does not lose interest in playing. If the student has any questions. I make sure it is taken care of right away during the lesson. I assign homework and you are expected to practice atleast once a week or learning guitar will be harder and more frustrerating. Read More

Each student has an individual connection with music, and therefore a teacher should be willing to adapt their methods in the best interest of each student. When working with a new student, I devote the first lesson to getting to know each other; the student's interest in music, their proficiency level (if they've studied in the past), their hobbies, Depending on that meeting we might choose to focus more on music theory, or ear training, or performance repertoire; whatever the student and I set as a goal for our work together. I have experience teaching music at the Fort Washington School of Rocks Rookies Program which consisted of performance-based, group lessons that included exposure to music fundamentals, and experience playing all of the major rock instruments (drums, guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, and vocals). Through my eight years with The School of Rock (SoR), I imparted my love for music to children and inspired their journeys through The Rookies and SoR 101 programs, individual lessons, summer camps, rehearsals, shows and eventually tours.
