I teach all aspects of brass playing: air control, embouchure development, articulation, tone, range, and musical interpretation of all styles. I teach a complete understanding of the guitar fretboard. I incorporate music theory and an understanding of chord structure in all lessons, and for all instruments that I play and teach. I have played in a wide variety of musical groups from symphony to jazz and rock, so I can direct my teaching toward the styles that you enjoy. Read More

For beginning students, I always start with technique and posture, as improper technique can be catastrophic to your playing down the line. From there we'll cover the basics, such as chord shapes, strumming patterns, and scales. For example, if the student in question likes Punk Rock music, every week we'd go over a riff from a popular Punk song. Read More

When I was offered a gig as Billy Joe Royals guitarist it was back on the road. I've also done road work with such notables as The Classics IV and Archie Bell. After the tours I opened a recording studio and for many years I played on many artists' original songs playing guitar, keyboard and bass guitar as needed, as well as did the engineering on the tracks. During this time I began to rekindle my love of teaching guitar and began accepting students again. Read More

It's all about having a clear goal in mind and working towards it: we'll have conversations about objectives and musical preferences (classical? jazz? rock and pop?) and then develop goals based on those preferences (playing live? what kind of pieces/songs?). Once I have an idea of where the student wants to be, I share my lesson plans with them and tell them what particular exercises or songs/pieces will fit those goals. Read More

I typically start teaching students with very basic chords and very simple songs. I usually feel satisfied if the student is able to pick up on a simple song by the end of the first lesson and learning songs is the best way to learn guitar in my opinion. I usually will work with the student on what music they like and what they want to learn then we can sit and learn it together. Read More

Carefully selected repertoire helps students develop phrasing, dynamics, and musicality while also reinforcing technical skills. Preparing for a first recital performance is often a motivating and rewarding experience for young students. I work closely with them to ensure they feel prepared and confident, guiding them through the process of setting goals, refining their pieces, and learning how to perform in front of an audience. These early performance experiences help build self-esteem and teach valuable lessons about preparation, focus, and perseverance. Read More
