When I start out with a new student I like to see what kind of learning works best for them. Are they a visual, audio or tactical learner? from there I modify each lesson for each individual student. I make sure my lessons are a very positive experience with no criticism. I teach with charts, tablature and standard notation. My primary method of teaching is to have my students study from my own books, in addition to publications by Mel Bay and Hal Leonard. Read More

Stylistically, I prefer one-on-one lessons with students because I tend to see better results than in group lessons. If a student doesn't understand something I have other ways of teaching. I am quite proud of my approach to teaching because there is always more than one way to deliver understanding of a particular subject or concept. Based on past performance students have appreciated my demeanor and countenance. My teaching style and lessons will keep them engaged throughout the week. Read More

More than anything music should be fun. The greatest musicians are the ones who enjoy playing music even when they're just practicing. I like to teach in a way that involves asking the student questions in order to get them to figure out the answer for themself, rather than just lecturing the whole time while they start daydreaming! This way the student is more involved in the learning process and it can make their time spent learning an instrument more worth it. Read More

I try to go slow at first, focusing mostly on the instrument and how it works as well as how to take care of it. For instance, with guitar I teach them string names, how to change strings, what the different parts are (i.e. bridge, neck, tuners.) I'll teach a few chords along with this and when they are getting a handle on those I will move into learning scales and songs. Read More

I'm a passionate musician who eats, sleeps, and breathes music. The minute I had a guitar in my hand since I was 14, I never stopped falling in love with the instrument. While I graduated in 2015 with a Bachelors of Science degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago, I was performing with local musicians around the area and taking jazz lessons with faculty and students within the university. Since moving to Detroit at the end of 2015, I have become integrated within the local Detroit music scene, playing with two bands currently, which have played music festivals such as the Hamtramck Music Festival and the Detroit Concert of Colors. I like to use various method books since I believe every single one of them provide different pedagogical aspects. Depending on the style, genre that the student wants to learn, I make sure they have enough resources to practice themselves in their own home. For children, I try to keep it as light and fun so they won't burnout over the long journey of learning music. For teenagers and young adults I like to show the possibilities of the instrument and where they can be with persistence and for adults I'd like to guide and help them to find what they like the most and enjoy learning and playing. Every student is different. Music Theory, various styles and forms and performance are all important and part of the main focus. I also like them to learn songs and styles that they enjoy. It's important for them to pick up their instrument every day, develop their calluses and coordination. I find this not only encourages them to play and explore more on their own, but keeps their focus on developing their own style. Read More
