I started playing guitar about a month before my twelfth birthday. From the beginning I was highly determined to learn guitar technique and music theory. I teach strong instrumental fundamentals, along with music theory comprehension, sight-reading, and ear training. I also like to emphasize ensemble playing using instrumental duets. I use appropriate level texts based on the student's experience first and age level second but always teach from what will make either younger students or adults feel comfortable. Fun is a must in one's progression but focus is key to success. For any student that I teach, I always start by finding out the student's primary motivation and interests and then I develop the teaching style appropriate to their needs. Often times, beginning adult learners are simply interested in learning some songs so beginning with chord progressions to build up confidence and have them playing something recognizable within a few short lessons. My teaching experience began in my post undergraduate college days. After graduation, I began studying at a studio called Jazz Improv with a Master's level instructor. One of his students asked for a saxophone teacher and the party was referred to me. I was then able to obtain a second saxophone student; I have also had two piano students when teaching.
