Almost immediately after starting to play music, I began teaching my friends and family members how to play. I became the guitar teacher at my high school, teaching beginning guitar students for the last semester of my senior year. Then, when I went to college, I continued teaching friends and starting picking up students who I did not know at all for the first time. These experiences taught me how to deal with all age levels, and different styles of student learning. Read More

I encourage students to develop their ears, by giving them ample of exercises and homework that will eventually help in ear training. I help them to setup a realistic goals for each week so that students can see their accomplishment by themselves. Music is not only about playing alone, its get more interesting and creative when played in duet or trio or even in a band. Since, I always learned playing by looking at other people live in front of me and jamming with them, I encourage them to learn from the person in front of them rather than just play at home in front of their computers. Aside from whatever primary genre they (or their parents) care to learn, students under my tutelage should expect to learn bits and pieces of everything; jazz, bluegrass, classical, metal, and anything else that I feel can create a 'musician-of-all-genres,' so to speak. One note: for parents interested in having their child learn classical guitar, I feel it's good to have the kid learn at least some other genres prior to moving onto classical. Read More

I try to give each student an idea whats coming next, every few lessons or so, while practicing what their on currently. This idea is not for every student so it is a selective process I use with the brightest ones, or fast learners and good practicers. When I see a student really start to play well I gain confidence in my teaching style...but when needed I can dial it back a notch or two. I'm a veteran guitar instructor and performer who loves sharing my knowledge with my students. I have been teaching and playing professionally for the past 16 years. In 2006, I graduated from Capital University's Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Guitar Performance. I currently teach private guitar lessons from my home studio, sing and play guitar in the Chicago rock band Dead Parade, and also play classical guitar at restaurants, weddings and other special events. Over the past 20 years, I have developed a very successful method of getting students up and playing the guitar very quickly focusing primarily on the mechanics of playing the guitar. The guitar is a highly physically demanding instrument and requires very regular practice just to get to the point where sound that can be turned into music can be made. For more intermediate and advanced students, I draw on my extensive performance experience and focus on practical, real world techniques and theory to help them advance their playing. Read More

For beginning students I believe it's important for them to begin playing the first day. I get the students to make their first sound and teach the technique and theory as they learn their instrument. For beginning voice students I use the same method, but I like to use a song that the student knows. For students with experience I like to have them play or sing something they know and I evaluate that and I will work with them on that song and build their technique. Read More
