For a student who has never played before, I begin by explaining the physics of the instrument. My teaching style is based primarily on theory and practice. While every student can and will progress according to their needs, I think its important to start with basics, like how to properly hold and play the instrument. Once the basics are down, well usually transition towards learning more music theory, like scales and chord structures, and how to build a song from the ground up. For beginning students who are children, I start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements (or the Hal Leonard Guitar Method for guitar students) to build a strong foundation in reading music, proper technique, tone production, and fundamental skills. Once students have a solid grasp of the basics, I introduce age-appropriate solo repertoire to develop confidence and prepare them for their first recital performance.
