I am a 24 year old bassist who enjoys sharing my musical passion with others. I have studied the electric bass and the upright bass while attending Whitman college, focusing mostly on Jazz. I currently live in Brooklyn and play with my band, The Dogs. I've played on six records over the last two years including one that was named the fourth best free album of 2011.
As stated above, I believe in a foundational understanding of music and music literacy. I've witnessed, first hand, the handicap that people without basic formal knowledge of music have in the professional world. To this end, as we look at songs, techniques, etc., I like to continue to remind the student that everything we do incorporates the basic knowledge that we've acquired. Not all students are looking to develop advanced skills. Some are only interested in gaining enough skill to enjoy recreational playing. Also, everyone learns a little differently and, although I'm not a formally trained educator, I've learned a lot about being present and aware of the needs of each individual in order to facilitate their musical goals. Whatever the desire or goal, I am committed to providing the necessary tools to help reach it and make learning music fun and interesting.
Understanding the desire of each student is important. What each student wants to do with thier instrument/music can be a very unique experience. Some players want to be able to play chords while they sing, some want to play solos, some want to write songs. Having student talk musically is important to me as a teacher so each lesson envolves me and the student talking about music in a musical way. Weather we are talking about counting the beats, beats in a measure, chord changes, the actual chord being played. Identifying what we are doing is something we consatnly challenge ourselves on.
I started teaching lessons when I was 16 working for a music day camp in Bellevue, WA. I loved working with young kids who liked rock music and had heart when it came to their love of music. My mom has been a teacher my whole life, and I believe in people passing on knowledge and experiences to each other to help people grow and discover the world. I think my strongsuit would be in teaching players closer to the beginning of their playing journey, as that was the most formative time for me and when I had the strongest teacher influence in my life. Most of my philosphies would best work from a beginning player's perspective. Having self-taught myself many things I think I can relate to player's who are similarly self-taught, play more intuitively, and haven't had a technical or theoretical background to a huge degree. I think I can help a lot with getting people out of the boxes they create for themselves in playing as that's my biggest goal as of late. And I definitely see music as being a hugely sacred and spiritual act that humans have been doing forever, and not just something that's taught in schools and done to win competitions or have careers, so I can relate to people's emotional connections to music and explore that side as well. Being able to express musically is a joy, and so my approach is to foster an engagement with it, and focus on your unique relationship with music, rather than forcing people to follow obligatory structures. More advanced players--my specialty area is improvisation and I think I could be of help for those interested in this area!
Lessons will start with an assessment of what the student wants to learn and what their goals are. From there, we will determine the proper approach to meet those goals while keeping things fun and interesting. Once a particular skill level and interest are established I will develop an individualized lesson plan for the student to fit their wants and needs. The goal with beginning students is to get them up and running right away with chords and melodies, learning the fundamentals while being able to play their favorite songs. For all students I like to extensively focus on knowledge of the fret board and the many possible approaches to mastering it, as well as looking at creative practice methods and daily routines. A musician’s method of practicing can greatly determine their rate of improvement. For more intermediate and advanced students the general focus will shift to topics such as ear training, rhythm, music theory and music notation (if desired) and, their application to the guitar.

Students are able to start taking guitar lessons with Musika by the age of 6. Students of this age are advised to learn on a half-sized classical guitar with nylon strings, as it will be much easier to play. They will start by learning simple tunes on the top strings of the guitar. By age 7-8, students will have progressed on to learning to play chords and how to play and sing along to some of their favorite songs. At age 10-12, students are often able to hold a full size guitar quite comfortably, and may want to learn rock music on an electric guitar.
Musika offers one-on-one, in-home guitar lessons that are designed specifically for each individual student. Whether your lesson takes place in a teacher's studio or at home, students will get the exact same lesson content, with the only difference being the location. Parents will find home guitar lessons a much more convenient option for their child, as it saves the time and costs of transporting their children to and from a studio. Younger students will find that learning to play the guitar in the comfort of their own home greatly benefits their development as they are learning in a supportive, secure, and familiar environment.
It is recommended that young students begin by learning on smaller, half or three-quarter sized guitars. If they are able to hold it comfortably, older students could start off using an electric guitar. A good student model guitar can be obtained brand new for between $150 to $200. However, this price does not include the cost of buying an amplifier or guitar cables, which are essential for an electric guitar player. Higher quality instruments are often easier to play, which provides the student with a much greater chance to enjoy and develop in their learning.
Whether your goal is to learn to play your favorite tunes, learn to compose your own music, develop a new technique, or just to play for fun, the experienced teachers in our network can help you make those goals a reality! Musika recommends that adult students begin lessons with a clear goal or two in mind, which can greatly help a teacher create a customized lesson plan just for your own lessons. By sticking to the teacher's lesson plan during your weekly practice sessions, you'll see faster results and have more fun while playing the guitar.
Young children will start out by learning how to fret notes with one hand, and how to pluck or strum the strings with the other. This will allow them to play simple, familiar songs on one string. Students will also be taught to read music, and will eventually learn how to play the common open guitar chords. Once students are more familiar with the guitar fret board, they can start learning barre chords, movable scales, as well as get introduced to music theory. Advanced students might decide to study classical guitar repertoire, rock or blues solos, or even jazz improvisation.

David is not only a great musician and educator but also a delightful human. We began using David six years ago as a piano teacher for my two boys. Since then my eldest moved on to acoustic and electric guitar and my youngest electric and stand up bass. Somewhere along the way I began to take guitar lessons also (I was David's most bearded student at age 48). David always came prepared to lead but also to follow, he often asked what we were listening to and taught us how to play it. His ability to listen to a piece of music and transcribe it always left me amazed, we have several notebooks full of songs we learned individually or played as a group. After a shoulder injury David continued to impress by teaching me music theory instead of our usual lesson. I could go on forever, David made a positive impact on my family and feel fortunate to have met him.

Having taken 6 years of piano lessons myself when I was young, I am very happy with Osmond teaching my daughter. He is very personable and helping her to enjoy piano. My daughter loves the fun songs she gets to play and I really appreciate how he is integrating even in the first month fingering, chords, beats, and hearing the music. Very knowledgeable on every aspect of music theory. I listen to recording artists playing various classical pieces, Dan's playing is much like a recording artist's playing. Always on time. Vince is a great drum teacher for my 8 year old son. We go to his house where he has a studio setup with a huge drum set. He has been very patient but really holds my son responsible for learning the right way to play. After about 5 lessons, my son is playing some rhythms on the drums and reading music. He looks forward to his lessons with Vince.

Martina has been teaching our daughter violin since early 2015. Every time our daughter has a lesson she comes away in such a great mood - she really enjoys her lessons! Martina is positive and encouraging and adjusts her teaching to help our daughter learn the best way for her learning needs. We were curious about how online lessons would work, and it turns out that they work really well. The 1:1 time and ability to teach from a distance make it work just as well as in person. We've had moves and schedule changes and Martina has been very flexible for us - which made such a big difference in making violin lessons accessible. Absolutely recommend her!

I have been playing the drums for about 5 years and I have to say that Alvaro is very patient. He has opened me up to new styles of music and I can now play a Songo groove! What I liked most was that he was flexible in what I wanted him to teach me and would also bring in new material specifically to what I wanted him to show me. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
