My method is to help students play the music they want to play, whether it's Miles Davis or the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I like to start my lessons by working on a song of the students choice to spark their interest. From there, I move to focusing on the students needs technically, rhythmically and theoretically. Additionally, I have my students practice improvisation, in some capacity, at each lesson. I want my students to feel comfortably making music on the fly and I set up low stakes environments for them to hone this skill. My lessons are rather free form and adapt easily to what is interesting my students at the time. However, at the end of every lesson, the student and myself set practice goals as well as goals for the next lesson. I strongly believe in short and long term goals to help keep students focused.
I've been teaching music, in some capacity, since I was 17 and captain of my highschool's drumline. In college I taught drumset lessons to students of all ages and in graduate school I taught a music theory course for 5 semesters as well as classical percussion to 6th - 8th graders. Getting to know my students, what they like and don't like, what they read and listen to, is one of my favorite things and I think it really helps engender a life long passion for music when a teacher takes a personal interest in the students lives. I enjoy playing and listening to so many kinds of music that I may not have even known about had it not been for some of my teachers, and I hope to enrich the lives of my students in the same way.
I enjoy helping my students discover their own individual learning style, and with this knowledge I am able to adjust my teaching method appropriately. In developing a passion for music, it is important to first determine the type of music you enjoy. Students naturally want to learn and play the music they love, so the genre of music that I teach depends on the student's preference.
Guitar is my main focus, but I am also comfortable teaching bass and some basic drumming. I specialize in rock, blues, pop, metal, reggae, r&b, and acid jazz. I have taught and created curriculums for students (ages 7-12) in an afterschool program called PRIDE. I also have been giving private lessons in guitar and bass for about 12 years now. I love sharing my love for music and genuinely enjoy seeing the growth in knowledge and skill of my students!
I have been teaching and tutoring music students of all different ages and backgrounds for the past 5 years. I have taught in my home studio, tutored at Bellevue College, worked in public and private school programs and even in an educational festival setting. My first experience tutoring was at Bellevue College where I worked as classical music theory tutor teaching college students from the ages of 18-60. Following Bellevue College I began teaching guitar, ukulele and music theory in person and online in my private studio. As an addition to my private studio, I have taught at places such as Washington Middle School, Community Arts Create Rhapsody Program as well as the Northwest Wintergrass Festival Youth Academy

Students can start taking their lessons as young as 6 years old with a half size classical guitar (with nylon strings) by playing simple melodies on the top strings. Every child learns and develops at their own pace, but by age 7-8, students will be forming and playing various guitar chords and learning simple songs that they can sing along to. Older students will graduate to being able to comfortably handle a full size guitar around the ages of 10-12, which is when many students become more interested in learning rock guitar and want to get an electric model.
It is highly recommended that young students begin by learning on smaller, half or three-quarter sized acoustic guitars. For older students, an electric guitar may be suitable, on the basis that they can hold it correctly and with comfort. For between $150 - $200, many student model guitars can be bought from new. Electric guitar players will also need to purchase an amplifier and guitar cables, at additional costs. Remember, higher quality instruments are often easier to play, which will likely enhance the students enjoyment and development on the instrument.
The teacher's in Musika's network plan guitar lessons with the specific requirements of each individual student in mind. During the course of their guitar lessons, students can generally expect to learn: how to hold, tune, and familiarize themselves with the components and notes of the guitar, basic playing techniques such as fretting, fingering, and strumming, and learning the various chord-types that they will need in order to play their favorite songs, such as power chords, open chords, and barre chords. Students will also get to learn music theory, and will cover such aspects as reading music, learning different scales, and how to apply these different elements together as part of a full composition. Students will learn the theory and techniques that underlie a wide range of musical genres, and will have fun developing their guitar playing during their lessons. Eventually, students will get to enjoy learning and playing along to their favorite songs!
For students looking to start learning to play the guitar, we recommend that they do so with a particular goal in mind. You may wish to learn how to play your favorite songs, develop your compositional abilities, or learn music theory. Maybe you are an advanced player wanting to take their playing to the next level? Whatever the goal, the experienced teachers in our network can help bring these wishes to life. It takes time to learn and develop your guitar playing, and may take a couple of months before you start to achieve your aims. The best way to guarantee you meet your goals is through regular practice and lesson time.
Need to save time because of your busy schedule? Why not try in-home guitar lessons? A qualified instructor in our network can travel to you and provide excellent quality instruction in the comfort and convenience of your own home.

My son is truly enjoying his lessons with Chris. He looks forward to them and is motivated to practice. Chris is conscientious and shows up on time and whenever he is supposed to. He communicates clearly if rescheduling is ever required and is accommodating when we need to change the day. I would recommend Chris to anyone.

Usually I don't write reviews. I am compelled to write for Feng. I've experience finding/working with many music teachers over the years for different instruments (piano, flute, sax) for kids. I think Feng is the best, he is so passionate about music, he encourages the kids. He teaches thoroughly - you can tell he knows lot about saxophone. I would definitely recommend Feng!!

Darrell is A-Maz-Ing! He demands results from his students and therefore results come quickly. The time he spends teaching is intense and packed with great instruction. He is a tough teacher but offers lots of valuable instruction that is applicable for music as well as life in general. I highly recommend Darrell if you are ready for results!

Andrew is very encouraging and uplifting, but also isn't afraid to tell you your weaknesses. Andrew also is super awesome with scheduling. Fits around your schedule all the time. He really knows what he is doing and can help you reach your goal in the time you would like to. Couldn't have gotten a better teacher, who continually helps me grow and pushes me.

Ed is THE best instructor I've ever had and I've had many instructors over the years in various fields of study. Ed met us at a music store to help choose a guitar, this is after he first called and asked all the right questions. He's supplied my daughter with just the right amount of paper work and just the right amount of new techniques. By this I mean to say that Ed connects with the pace my daughter learns at. I highly recommend Ed AND Musika.

"My daughter is 10 years old and has been taking piano lessons with Mr. Dale J. for almost 4 years now. She is progressing nicely. His kind and gentle way make for a very positive learning experience. Mr. Dale J. is encouraging without being harsh or belittling. He is patient and the ideal instructor for my daughter."

His 30 year plus teaching experience along with his knowledge of ever longer in music composition and performance make a real difference if you're in for learning the right way. Thank you Cory for teaching me not only the chords but also the history behind it and awesome tricks on getting better faster ;)

Dave is a fantastic teacher. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to students that I think is invaluable. At the same time, this does not limit him from working with beginning students. He is very communicative with the parents as far as schedule changes. We are so grateful to have found him!!
Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
Are you sure that's your only availability? The more availability you easier it will be to arrange a teacher for you.
