If there is a problem one my face in their individual practice, I am diligent in problem solving in our lesson. I work with my students to find small scale goals to work towards, and when they reach them, we find a new goal together. I have a basic set of books to work through that help with tone development and technique, but my main focus is helping the student develop the sound they want and discover what style of music is best for them. I always encourage students to find contemporary books with fun songs to try out, like a Disney series or pop songs. In addition, for those who are in school band, I highly recommend they bring in their materials at the beginning and have a lesson or two on them, especially if they have any solos or auditions pending. As the student advances, so do the materials. At the intermediate to advanced level, we will explore more technically engaging solos, and focus a lot on etude and scale work. Read More
