I began private teaching while studying in college and am looking to expand and build a studio in The Greater Seattle Area. I have taught my own students and acted as a substitute teaching instructor ; nurturing and respecting the teaching styles already presented to the students. During my schooling in Boston, I studied Alexander Technique and always try to incorporate body awareness when working with students! I have helped former students achieve their goals for auditions and recitals, and enjoy helping students find a piece that really sparks their interest. Read More

I believe in being very structured with young students, as children thrive on structure. I give precise weekly practice assignments and expect the parents to be involved with their child's practicing. For adults, I like to have them set the tone as to what they want to work on, as adults have goals in ways that children do not. I would ask an adult student why they they had come to study flute with me and listen to what they wanted. Read More

My methods are not unusual, although I am a bit. Based on the the students experience and ability, or lack thereof, I'll make suggestions about what music to get. Often they already have music that will work, to which I will add developemental studies of various sorts. For example, I like Bartok's Mikrocosmos which he wrote to teach is nine year old son to play piano. Many things can be learned with no book at all, but reading music is also important. Read More

I have very high standards for teaching. That is why I did not start teaching until my fourties. At that point I felt that I had both the life experience and skills to be a good teacher. There is a lot more to playing music than just playing the right notes. That is what I call the mechanics of music but the not the soul.Obviously you must start with the basics to get to any deeper level of expression. That is what I am most passionate about. Why does anyone want to play an instrument? My main focus is trying to teach students HOW to learn music, so that they can eventually create their own methodology based on what works best for them. I have eight years of experience teaching private lessons, so I understand how to craft a curriculum to an individual's needs. Working with hundreds of different musicians has taught me that everyone learns music differently: some through sight reading, others with audio recordings, others still by watching someone else do it first. We can work on specific topics during our lessons, but I can also give you a bunch of things to review/work on during your own time. Read More

I began teaching as a supervised and mentored Guided Practice Teacher, helping students learn to practice and become their own teacher. After a few years of that, I was deemed "Ready To Teach" by my supervisors and mentors. Today, my students have excelled in their Flute Performance degrees at top universities, placed in regional and national competitions and auditions, and developed a life-long love of music. Having studied with some of the world's best flutists and teachers, I have the tips, tricks, and tactics to make sure you learn quickly and properly, while still having fun! Read More

I first find out how the students learns best. Knowing if somebody is hands on, likes to listen, needs to watch, be shown etc. can impact the experience and quality of the lesson. Using analogies is something that has really helped me in my practicing so I enjoy passing that on. Setting realistic short term and long term goals are absolutely essential to progression, along with finding an inspiration. I have always found a player who inspired me and would figure out what they were doing to sound the way they sound. Read More
