I use a big diversity of books and methods for my flute classes, that I pick trying to adapt to my students' age and interests. With little children I use many short and simple songs, that get more and more complex while the students are progressing. I like to introduce solo repertoire as soon as possible, to start developing the students' personal taste for music. I also encourage them to bring their own suggestions about the pieces or songs they want to play, and I create personalized technique exercises to improve the specific difficulties that they find along their practice. While Joey loves to preform, he is passionate about teaching. He has been teaching since 2011. His teaching career began through the non-profit Bravo Waukegan in their Bravo Buddies Summer Camp. He began as the woodwind instructor and through the years worked to become the Artistic Director, managing all aspects of the month long camp. It is important that when attending private lessons that a student receives individualized instruction geared to their specific level of playing and their musical desires. Because of this, I like to utilize a systematic approach to lessons--each week students work on scales (Major, minor, chormatic), etudes/lesson books, solo repertoire, duet and a piece of choice. Once we've learned all the fundementals, I like to give students the ability to choose their repertiore (with guidance of course!), offering 3-5 examples of possible solo work--but we're always working on a "fun" piece of choice.I believe that engaging students in the selection process of repertoire helps create ownership, especially when practicing.I like to have students set tangible short and long-term goals so that we're always improving during lessons.
