For very young students who have never read music, I would begin with flute posture on a special Suzuki flute if the student is smaller framed. Blowing and embeshure is of utmost importance the first few weeks and I will have students practice blowing into a bottle and only the head joint of their flutes. Read More

When first introduced to a new student, I typically have them play for me to assess their abilities on the instrument as well as their knowledge of general music theory. Once that is done, I am then able to recommend the appropriate materials that work best for the student. For students at any level, I try to see what they are interested in musically and fit time in their development to work on the things that get them excited about music and also help them progress on their instrument.
