I work with my students in the traditional mentor-pupil model, so you and I would work as a team to develop your playing. Because of this, all my lessons are one-on-one, ensuring each student gets the individualized attention they deserve and require for learning the flute and to accomplish their specific goals. Some students have dreams of going to conservatory, some want to get into a higher band at school, others just want to play beautiful melodies for family and friends. Read More

I use elements of Social and Emotional Learning in my teaching: students are encouraged to have their own voice in the learning process. We discuss repertoire selection, I encourage them to talk about how the music makes them feel or what they think it's trying to express. This also assists in goal setting, which I do collaboratively with the student, rather than dictate their practice regimen. I respect that lessons are probably not the only thing they're doing and I believe that respect is why students enjoy studying with me for many years. Read More

I began teaching in 2012 when I was awarded the Graduate Assistant position at Western Michigan University. As a G.A., I was responsible for teaching non-music majors saxophone lessons, theory and ear-training, as well as coaching ensembles. I also taught flute and clarinet at Paramount Charter Academy in Kalamazoo, Michigan to middle school students. It was a very rewarding experience to teach people of various ages, ability levels, and goals, and allowed me to refine my teaching methods based on the needs of each student. I currently teach music theory, piano, saxophone, clarinet, flute, drums, and composition at Belle Arti Center for the Performing Arts in Queens, NY. Read More

When teaching younger students, I prioritize developing a passion for music through engaging repertoire and positive encouragement, while instilling proper technique and organized practice with weekly progressive assignments. I also establish practice expectations and share progress with parents. In every lesson I demonstrate concepts by performing various woodwinds and piano, and by singing. Advanced students work towards external goals established in consultation with both students and parents like school concerts, honor band/orchestra auditions, or college applications, encouraging students to grow their musical community outside of the lesson studio. Music is what I love to do, and have always loved to do. I owe my accomplishments and my deep connection with music to the musicians who have taught me over the last 19 years. I have performed in concerts throughout the United States, China and in Banff Canada, in halls such as Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium, Zankel Hall and Weill Recital Hall, as well as Symphony Space, Galapagos Art Space NYC, Sprague Hall, and the Shubert Theater. For a young child to love music, a teacher must introduce it to him or her in a passionate way, without forcing it one the child. The struggling student is just as capable of loving music, just as much as the accomplished one. As I mentioned earlier, all students learn at different paces, so I teach each student as close as humanly possible to their level. It is not important for a child to play like a professional musician, but to play like the student has put his or her heart into learning the music. Read More

I like to be able to tailor my methods and materials for each individual student, so that I can address each students unique challenges on the flute, as well each students musical interests. It is very important to me that all my students are enjoying what they are playing. Having fun is an essential part of the process. While in all my lessons I will teach core concepts for proper flute technique and basic music theory proficiency, the rest is unique to student, depending on skill level, age, and learning style Read More
