The first thing I like to establish with my students is a solid practice routine. There is no formula that works perfectly for everyone, but I do have a very good system which can easily be altered to fit each students individual needs. The next step is to set realistic goals. When students have a clear vision of what they are working towards, it is much easier to stay motivated and on track to achieving those goals. Read More

I first ask the student to play so I can hear him/her. After a student plays a short piece of music of their own choosing I can determine what the next step is. Each student has his/her own individual needs. In general though I focus on 3 key elements: 1) Sound quality 2) Technical dexterity (how the fingers deal with the twists and turns of the instrument) 3) Reading Music If a student has a specific genre of music that he/she wants to focus on then I mainly concentrate on that. You can learn so much about a student in a 30 minute trial lesson! If a new student is not a total beginner, I will ask them to play their favorite song (or one of their favorites if they have trouble choosing just one). After their performance, I ask them what they liked about how they played. Its important for students to always be aware of what they do well. If they arent able to see their strengths on their own then I share with them what I think their strengths are and encourage them to keep that up. Read More

My experience in teaching began in college, teaching younger college students through my schools mentorship program. I also shadowed high school and middle school students lessons through the Hartt School Community division. I was able to learn to teach these students guided by several experienced and accomplished flute instructors. Now currently I am an adjunct flute instructor at NYU. I teach non-major flute students at NYU, which has allowed me to teach students with all different musical backgrounds and skill levels. Read More

While I generally begin with the Rubank Method and move onto a more personalized approach after 7th or 8th grade, I am always focused on providing the individual student with the best guidance possible. I like to encourage solo performance for friends and family early on to achieve performance experience and mitigate nervousness. If a student is interested in jazz or other styles of improvisation or composition, they will have a chance to get their feet wet in these areas at a young age as well. Read More

I do, however, allow diversion and conversation in lessons. If there is a song that may explain the musical idea, we will stop and listen. If a young child wants to relay a story from school they thought of because of our practice, I will stop and listen. I may also speak in depth about musical history, style, or even the psychology of music. I think this combination draws students into the mind of a musician, and gets them to start thinking like one.
