Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! It 's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. I prefer one on one lesson time. Parents are welcome to stay and watch if they'd like. I don't have a particular style. I have just graduated from college and there are colleagues of mine who have been in the teaching feild longer than I have. However, I have learned and solidified a good teaching technique and energy, making the process individual to the student. Two of my students have done very well in their NYSSMA exams in the past year. For beginning young students I prefer the Rubank Elementary Method for saxophone, clarinet and flute, and my own (unpublished) method for recorder. For older beginners, there are many books on the market. I'll work with what the student perfers. For more advanced students there are classic works such as Klose for clarinet or saxophone, solo works for competition or performance, or just for fun. I want recorder students to learn the 2 basic sets of fingering, since ensemble playing usually requires changing instruments. Read More

For beginning students I typically start with Hannon and my own finger exercises. I ask the the student to draw notes on a staff so they can get familiar with reading and composing music. All students from beginner to advanced, are given warm up exercises and recommended pieces to play . After 30 years of teaching piano, organ and flute ,I have written my own lesson books series. I like to get to know my students before real in depth work can begin. Why are you interested in music? Why flute specifically? What other activites interest you? etc. I ask these questions so that analogies can be made to show how most things apply to all interests. Practice techniques in sports are similar to those in music for example. Knowing a student's personality outside of music also helps when setting goals, such as what to work on specifically in each lesson, what they are working towards in their own practice, and what future plans they have for music.
