I usually find out the student's musical preferences and try to pick songs from that style, meanwhile, introducing them to classical music or folk music and helping them pick music to work on from that genre. I follow a similar pattern with flute lessons. Depending on the experience of the student, lessons can begin a little more slowly than with the other two instruments since wielding the instrument is largely dependent hand size and length of arms! In my opinion, I believe in the four "T" s. The student must generate a robust tone, that's their signature. Then comes technique, fluid technique is vital. Thirdly, is good sense of time, you can't perform without it. Lastly is taste, a student must acquire an acute sense of musical taste. These four principals are essential for all levels of music performance. Once a good foundation is established, the student will have the tools he needs to take on any musical challenge. Read More

My methods vary greatly depending on the student's goals and experience. Through the first few years of study, an emphasis on the fundamentals of music and instrumental skills is required. This typically takes the form of a beginning method book. For students beyond this phase of study, advanced technique work takes the form of scale, chord, and interval studies. I couple these with the development of repertoire that fits the needs and goals of that student. Read More
