Always start where the student is, and take them from there. Always encourage and inspire students to be better than yesterday. Progress, no matter the amount, is progress. Take your own pace. If you have a specific deadline, for example a college audition, you will have to commit to practicing more than usual and we will create a plan of action. Also, I do write letters of recommendation. For students of all ages, I like to lead with the quote from Marcel Moyse; "Practicing is a matter a time, patience and intelligent work", for I believe that once this is applied to the idea of practicing and general encounters with ones instrument, then success and progress is guaranteed. Aside from that principle, I like the idea of independent work from students to keep them accountable on the journey to becoming a musician but a more interactive and demonstrative approach during the lesson to give students an idea of what needs to be done while being that good role model so that they may keep motivated work hard at becoming the best possible musicians.
