I graduated from Northwestern University this June with my Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education and Saxophone Performance. For beginners students, I start with Trevor Wye's Beginners Book for Flute, as well as Rubank's selected duets (Volume 1), and Marcel Moyse The Debutante Flutist. Once we have covered the basic foundations of the flute and have formed a core sound, I then introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate for the students. For all of my students, I always like to ask what they are interested in playing, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

For beginning kids, I usually start with three or four major scales and a couple of other basic routines to improve their knowledge of the notes and their tone. One book I like to use is Carl Fischer'sFlute 101: Mastering the Basics.Once the student seems to have made progress in these areas, I introduce them to one very simple melody from a well known song, such as O Christmas Tree or Fur Elise. I want each lesson to be exciting and productive for each student. I have different methods for each student's particular needs and desires, but the primary goal is that the student has fun and enjoys their lessons. For students who would like to learn classical music I have extensive training in repertoire. I also play duets with students, and play along with recordings. I want all my students to have a strong foundation of technique and theory, so I have all my students wok on scales and scale patterns. For a students solo repertoire, I will give all my students lots of choices. I use collections such as Forty Little Pieces for Beginner Flutists (Louis Moyse) for beginners, 24 Short Concert Pieces (Hal Leonard) for intermediate, but I also have my own supplemental repertoire list with music for all levels (especially more advanced).
