I put a large emphasis both on sight-reading and learning to play by ear; I believe these are the most important two skills any musician can have, whether he be an amateur, professional, or somewhere in between (yes, there's an in-between!). I like to focus on whatever a student has coming up for an audition or a solo & ensemble festival. If I can help players have a great experience soloing in public or help them win an audition to play with a great band (and I have a very good track record with my students winning auditions), they'll be more motivated. A flute teacher in Colorado Springs who delights in being a part of my students' musical journeys, I have over forty years' teaching and performing experience in the United States, Germany, and Norway. I have my Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance and performed as a part of U.S. Army Bands. Over the years I have taught in music stores, band rooms, community centers, and my home studio. Students have shown accelerated progress in tone, musicianship, and technique; consistently placed in All-County, -District, and -State Honor Bands and Orchestras; been awarded superior ratings in Solo and Ensemble Festivals; and enjoyed the weekly interaction with a trusted adult who listens and genuinely cares about each individual student. I blend the tried-and-true poise of classical technique with holistic approaches to satisfy two purposes: 1) the traditional desire to hone skill with practice and discipline, and 2) the psychological development of the student's independent musicianship. Music without expression is only sport. While technique, exercise, rigor, and history are essential in order to develop the deepest possible understanding of music, I aim to go beyond this to shape the independent expressionism of each student. I find teaching very rewarding and love to help students learn t love the flute and music. I try to teach music theory as well as flute technique and encourage music appreciation. Challenging h student with new material each lesson and trying to find out what inspires the student helps to keep lessons challenging and interesting. I also like to arrange for students to play together in duets and ensembles and to find out what their musical connection are with in their school or community. Read More

My methods would slightly vary on what goals the student is trying to achieve. However, all musicians must have a basic grasp of technique and fundamental skills in order to express music the way they would like to. Beginning with an overall assessment of technique is essential, and working to maintain and expand that level of proficiency is important for instrumentalists. After a routine has been established for warm ups and extension, I like to incorporate those skills into songs, pieces, or repertoire. Read More

At the start of the lesson, I will emphasize tone and air control which I've found makes a huge difference as a warm up. The primary books I will work out of are Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. As students progress and I feel that they have a handle on the basics, I will slowly start to incorporate other repertoire that will be exciting to play and perform. Also, it's never too early to start teaching scales and having students memorize them which will greatly help and improve their technical ability. Read More
