I currently teach beginning and intermediate flute students in my home and in students homes in the Annapolis area. I believe music should be an enjoyable activity and tailor music selections to the interest of students while providing a good musical foundation.
Since no two students are the same, I try to tailor lesson plans to each student's playing level. For elementary level students, I prefer to work out of the Rubank method books and if they are interested in jazz and/or improvisation, I supplement the lessons with etudes from the Lennie Neihaus Jazz Conception series. Lessons are usually broken into three parts: warmups (tone production and scales), technical exercises (from the Rubank method book), and depending on the student's level I'll assign an etude for them to work on. For adults, I am a little less structured when it comes to planning lessons. I prefer to find out what they would like to learn and get out of their lessons and then I'll create a lesson plan to fit their particular needs and interests.
I'm a dynamic, dedicated flutist who loves to perform and share that love with others. I hold degrees in flute performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music and have performed and taught extensively in the Cleveland and western New York areas. I also have a special interest in music theory and music history, having earned Early Music Performer's Certificates through the joint music program with Case Western Reserve University and tutored music theory at the Cleveland Institute of Music.

I was a Music Education and Psychology double major at Towson University. I have been playing clarinet for 14 years various ensembles, including but not limited to, orchestras, bands, marching bands, pep bands, and jazz bands. While at Towson, I participated in symphonic band, pep band, and marching band. I have held leadership positions with the Towson University Marching Band by serving on the Student Marching Advisory Council as clarinet section leader and drum major. Outside of Towson University, I was a woodwind specialist with the Westminster High School Marching Band. I have worked in various music stores including Bill’s Music House in order to strengthen my knowledge and pedagogy of other wind instruments. Professional memberships include Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band Fraternity and the National Association for Music Education. In these organizations, I have held leadership positions such as Northeast District Secretary/Treasurer, Alumni Relations Officer, and 25th Anniversary Chair for Kappa Kappa Psi.

Musika offers customized one-on-one music lessons at your home - a time saving solution for busy parents and students. The convenience of in-home flute lessons allows you to save time without having to transport your child to class, allows your child to maximize their busy schedule, and provides a safe and familiar environment in which to learn.
Most flutists begin in 4th grade. Unlike the piano or specific string instruments, it is not a good idea to start the flute before the student enters elementary school. The student does need to have the strength to appropriately hold the instrument, and have the lung capacity to blow into the flute and produce a supported sound. The flute is easy to hold, carry, and care for, so many young players find it an attractive option.
The teachers in our network create a customized lesson plan for every student. Topics covered during Musika's flute lessons may include, but are not limited to: correct embouchure formation, how to appropriately shape your lips to blow into the instrument, how to develop a solid tone in low and high registers, how to hold, assemble, and clean the instrument properly, fingerings for notes, techniques for developing quick finger action for passages, different articulation, how to slur or tongue cleanly, and most importantly, how to have fun playing the flute!
To start, Musika suggests renting a flute. For smaller players, a "candy cane" headjoint can balance the weight and make playing easier. As the flutist advances purchasing an open hole model with a B foot joint will produce a more mature sound. Our instructors can assist you in selecting the correct model for your student.
Many of our adult flute students are complete beginners, while others are former flutists now returning to an old hobby. We also have students who are more advanced and are looking to take their skills in to the next level. Our network of teachers have proven methods to get you the results you desire.

Darrell is A-Maz-Ing! He demands results from his students and therefore results come quickly. The time he spends teaching is intense and packed with great instruction. We value Chelsea for the quality of her lessons, but also for the flexibility of her schedule. She has worked around family vacations, impromptu summer camps and the upcoming school year. Our kids love Mr. Lynwood. Mr. Lynwood is very patient and skillful teaching our kids both music theory and guitar/piano. He keeps them engaged and motivated during their lessons and we are seeing -or rather hearing- fast improvement in the kids' dexterity playing their respective instruments. We would recommend this good natured instructor to anybody.

Bill has been great with my 2 young children (age 3 & 6). He has integrated games into the lessons - they have enjoyed showing us how to play the games when it is time to practice piano. Laura is a fabulous teacher. She explains concepts to me using concrete examples so that I can understand changes that I need to make to my posture, breathing, phrasing, etc. She makes warm-up exercises fun, and she's got a great sense of humor over all. Her teaching style is collaborative, more egalitarian (she respects what I already know and meets me at my level), tailored to my particular interests and strengths, and I always look forward to our lessons!

It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
