My teaching experience began in 2008, when I began teaching private lessons on various instruments, on voice, and on conducting. I later went on to teach band and choir at Cedar Bluff High School in 2011. After this, I volunteered as the band director at Valley Head High School in 2014. I have enjoyed every moment of teaching music and have taken so much from the experiences that I've had. Last year, one of my 2nd Grade Chicago Public School Band students performed the National Anthem for memory on the Alto Saxophone in front of 1000's of people at a race. One of my 1st Grade Violin Students impressed the president of Columbia College of Music so much that my students were offered life-time scholarships to attend Blues Kid's Camp, held annually at Columbia College in Chicago. I realize many students will learn at different paces so it's important to work with kids on an individual level to make sure they're learning most effectively. For beginning piano students, I use the Faber Piano Adventure series. This series is simple, filled with music theory, and keeps the young student motivated. For beginning flute students, I use the Trevor Wye flute instruction books, along with the curriculum that is being taught in the student's band class at school. As such, I like to have students play around with making sound on empty bottles, and with tools such as the Pneumo-pro. As a big believer in scales as the building blocks of good technique and music itself, I provide basic exercises as early on as possible. For intermediate and advanced students, I like to use the first lesson as an opportunity to hear a piece or two that they've played before, then work on some of the things they've already learned so I can determine what sorts of ideas they respond to and what they can work on improving.
