I've played flute since i was 9 years old and currently favor the alto flute, with its rich, lower tone. I play and teach both C flute (regular flute) and the alto flute. My methods vary from student to student, as I am very sensitive and flexible to the needs of the student as an individual. If the flutist plays in a band or orchestra at school, I like to review the music with them so they feel comfortable with it before we move on to lesson repertoire. Scales are also very important! (yes, I am one of those teachers :-) In terms of books I consistently use, I am particularly fond of Trevor Wye's books for beginners, the 'Melodious and Progressive Studies' etude books for any level, and Taffanel and Gaubert's daily exercise book for intermediate/advanced students.
