I've been playing flute for many many decades. I keep it fresh by continuing to learn more about music. It's an endless well of possibilities. I currently play with a jazz quartet. I've played flute since i was 9 years old and currently favor the alto flute, with its rich, lower tone. I play and teach both C flute (regular flute) and the alto flute. For beginners children, I like to start with a primer book. Either through the suzuki method or piano adventures. Also, there are instances where I find simple pieces from different composers, put them together into a booklet and start teaching through those while having the student write music theory in a music notebook. For beginner adults, I think its best to start with things they're interested in playing. I know that adults gravitate towards music because they would like to play some of their favorite songs and through that I teach them music, both theory and practice.  Read More

I use a wide variety of music in my lessons and customize the exact curriculum based on each student's goals, learning style, requests, and what I determine will be the right mix to maximize their progress and allow them to enjoy their practice time and the lessons. I also provide mp3 background tracks for most of the songs used in the lesson. I tend to favor Essential Elements for students (including adults) when they are first learning to play their instrument, but I also teach from the other band method books to accommodate what each student is using in their respective band class. Teaching is very new to me. For beginning students I would start with a Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book. Then when the student progresses the fundamentals I will start to introduce solo pieces for recital performance. For adults I will ask them what would be fun for them to play and make my lesson plans off of that to keep them engaged and having fun no matter what level they are. Read More
