For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements book, as well a basic understanding of music. Once the student has progressed to have a nice grasp of the fundamentals of music, I usually begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. As mentioned above, each student is motivated by something different and has different musical goals. I try to find ways to make lessons fun and interesting for each and every student. As such, my approach for a less serious student will be different from my approach for a more serious student. For beginning students who are children, I usually start with how to make a sound on the flute by practicing only the headjoint for the first week to help them develop the muscles in the lips and help to keep the aperture small. Once they feel confident with the headjoint, I would then teach them how to hold the flute properly and have a correct posture when playing. As soon as the student has progressed on these fundamentals, I will introduce them to the first notes on the flute which are typically B,A and G above the staff. Read More

In my 30 years of teaching experience, and being exposed to many methods, I chose to mix and match them to each student's ability and disposition. Each student is different with variety of expectations, abilities and interests, so as I get to know them, I try to best cater to their needs and find ways for them to learn while growing and improving on every level, not just musically.
