In May of 2016, I graduated from Texas State University with a Bachelor of Music Degree. I had an incredible opportunity to perform with the Texas State University Wind Symphony at the Collegiate Band Directors National Association conference in 2014. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for the fine arts! Therefore, it’s important that each student progresses at his or her own pace, I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a student’s desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. A method I use to encourage my student’s progress is to give them stars for when they work on their assignment; the stars they earn will allow the student to choose a song of their choice that is not from the same genre being studied—this may be a pop song.
