Instruments: Saxophone Flute Clarinet

Musical education should be as exciting as it is rewarding. I believe firmly that building a solid foundation in ear training, rhythmic consistency and theoretical knowledge is the surest way to motivate the type of practice that leads to improvement. My aim is always to make students self-sufficient in discovering, analyzing, performing and writing the music that they find most interesting. My students know that lessons with me are the best time to make their worst mistakes, and to achieve their greatest successes and that theyre free to smile the entire time. Read More

Instruments: Voice Flute Music

My students and I talk about their long-term goals from our first lesson. I always ensure that they can see the big picture that I can see, and our lessons are never only about improving the song or scene that they are working on in the lesson. I try to help my students see the connection between improving their performance techniques and preparation practices and their long-term improvement as a performer. Read More

Instruments: Saxophone Flute Clarinet

I began my teaching days informally when I was still a student at Fairport High School. Some family friends wanted to learn how to play saxophone, so I began teaching them. Next thing I knew, I had a small-time music studio in my parents' basement! I was teaching saxophone as well as jazz improvisation at that time. I took a break from teaching when I went to college, and began teaching again the summer after I graduated. Read More

Instruments: Flute Piccolo

It is important that when attending private lessons that a student receives individualized instruction geared to their specific level of playing and their musical desires. Because of this, I like to utilize a systematic approach to lessons--each week students work on scales (Major, minor, chormatic), etudes/lesson books, solo repertoire, duet and a piece of choice. Once we've learned all the fundementals, I like to give students the ability to choose their repertiore (with guidance of course!), offering 3-5 examples of possible solo work--but we're always working on a "fun" piece of choice.I believe that engaging students in the selection process of repertoire helps create ownership, especially when practicing.I like to have students set tangible short and long-term goals so that we're always improving during lessons.
