As young teacher, I find that I can be successful with students in both ways of teaching. It is much easier to inspire the student once I can grasp their way of learning. For beginners students, I start with Trevor Wye's Beginners Book for Flute, as well as Rubank's selected duets (Volume 1), and Marcel Moyse The Debutante Flutist. Once we have covered the basic foundations of the flute and have formed a core sound, I then introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate for the students. I ask all of my student to set realistic goals and treat our progress as a journey in which we will gradually pick up the skills to grow with steady work. This comes from enjoying the “artistic process” and can only be discovered when we move together at a pace that is comfortable for the student. My teaching experience dates back to my high school days, as I began teaching private lessons part-time 8 years ago, teaching primarily young beginning and intermediate students. I have served as a teaching assistant for the 2016 Ervin Monroe Summer Flute Choir Workshop, where I played side-by-side with the members of the flute choir and offered advice and guidance. I have also served as the the primary flute instructor for the annual McCourts Music Fifth Grade Instrument Fittings in Berkley, Michigan for the past 5 years, where I work with fifth grade students teaching them how to play the flute.
