I began teaching private lessons four years ago in various genres such as jazz, pop, musical theater, and classical - with a bit of music theory for those who have expressed interest. Students of mine have participated in recitals and have written their own compositions. Hello! I graduated from Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Jazz Studies (their way of saying "Jazz Piano") in the spring of 2018. During my time at IU, I took both Jazz and Classical performance lessons, and played a myriad of music in those styles plus Pop, R&B, and Blues. I played in IU's esteemed Wallarab Ensemble (the school's top big band) for five semesters, and spent one year (the maximum alloted time for any student) in the Plummer Ensemble, IU's flagship jazz group which performs around the country. I base my students' curriculum on their individual needs and interests. I strongly believe in learning fundamentals and the principals of music through scales, music theory, ear training, and reading music notation. I believe it is equally important for students to develop their own musical interests and goals so that we can apply all of the practiced skills in a fun and meaningful way. An example of this would is if a student wanted to learn a Beatles song I would have the student learn the chords and melody, but also the associated major/minor scale that song uses and develop an exercise that would be helpful towards learning the song. For beginning students, I typically begin with a deep dive on rudimental studies and keyboard skills on drums and mallet percussion. I gradually introduce notation and music literacy tools to improve the students understanding of how the fundamentals of music interact with one another. I use a lot of rote teaching methods as well to take full advantage of how physical percussion and drums can be. I find that students interests will quickly guide me to making suggestions for different repertoire to take on as the student is ready. Read More
