I have nearly 20 years experience playing drums and over 30 in music. I started playing guitar at age 8 and then drums at 22, which has given me a very well rounded knowledge of music. For Beginner students I would start with the Frederick Noad Classical Guitar book. This book is a great book to hold interest in the Students. This Book teaches Basics, but gets right down and dirty in to learning music. The Music in the book starts with simple Melody for the student, with some advanced part underneith to give the allusion to a young beginning student they are achieving greatly. I use different methods for students over 12 years of age and younger students. For the first group I base my teaching on Alan Dawson and Gary Chester style systems using variations for the students level and needs. For the second group I like using a Bobby Deitch method adding a play along list.. For both group , according to the musical needs of the student I might add some of my original material, some transcriptions, Wilcoxin Snare Drum Solo's, materials from Stick Control and Syncopation books. One of the cool things about teaching is that every student is different and learns differently! I am usually able to assess each students level and pace within the first couple lessons. At the end of each lesson I will give them a realistic goal to achieve for the next lesson. Any improvement is improvement and I try and always recognize that. I try to inspire by example as well, showing the student where their practicing and hard work can take them if they keep working at it diligently. Read More
