In addition to performing, my love for music extends into the classroom and private studio as well. I began teaching individual and group lessons 8 years ago, and I love finding new and exciting ways to expose my students to the latest methods and techniques to better their playing and musicality. I find that no matter what genre of music my students are interested in learning, consistent exposure to all styles is an invaluable tool in advancing ones abilities. I am always interested in taking on new students no matter their goals or experience level. Read More

That includes "found sounds", the many different objects that resonate, ring, buzz, pop, and provide some other when struck that allows for spontaneous music making. Said in another way, my teaching style is ALL ABOUT IMPROV. Improv in the teaching itself and conveying the notions of improv to the student, so even when you're reading the music that they're playing, they improving to whatever degree the situation allows. Improv means to make it your own. Read More

Since I took my first piano lessons as a child, I've dedicated my life to learning as much as I can about music both inside and outside of school and spreading the joy to others. I have been performing consistently with groups since my teen years: first jazz combos, ensembles and University orchestras, and more recently rock and metal acts. I have extensive experience touring, and encourage students to draw on my knowledge as both a studio and live performer. Read More

I also played piano for the Goucher college dance program and gave lectures on Music History, Music for Dance, and Rhythm in Music. Through the years I have had a variety of students: both beginners; and also advanced who went on to music school. I also teach beginning adults, most of whom wish to play chords, sheet music, or entertain family. I have performed some of the most difficult music written, including the Ives 1st Piano Sonata, and selections for Messiaen's "Vingt Regards sur l'enfant-Jsus". Read More

During my employment with Sallie B. Howard School for the Arts and Education (in Wilson, NC) where I introduced a marching band program and lead the band to winning second place in the Music in the Parks competition in May of 2015. During my internship I was able to develop a percussion line with the students in under a month. The formation and level of proficiency of the percussion section was so astonishing that administrators, staff, other teachers, and even the principal dropped in from time to time just to hear the progression of the ensemble. I have started my own pedagogy when it comes to teaching drums but it is pretty straightforward. The first lesson is about basic technique and learning the drums and cymbals and then moving into being able to play a simple rock beat. I have done so many trial lessons at this point that I have it down to a science and I have a very good amount of kids who sign up afterwards. Read More

As far as books go, I prefer the Hal Leonard method, especially for beginner musicians. I combine visual, audio and kinesthetic learning methods to tailor to anyone's needs. After the basics are taught or they're already learned, I assess the student's level and teach the student what they wish to learn to the best of my ability. Read More
