I have always believed that music is a conversation between the musician and the audience, and the instrument is the interpreter. With this in mind, with any age, I start with a regular conversation. Knowing the passion, interest level, and motivation of the students helps me create a method of teaching that is specific to the individual. I also learn their experience and knowledge level. I then let the student show me their skills by playing a little, allowing them to loosen up and get comfortable with me, while I analyze and access strengths and weaknesses. Read More

For teaching children, I approach teaching as to the execution of everyday and fun pieces, so that the child learns by, and in turn I introduce aspects of academic learning necessary to create a solid base. In the same way, with young and adults, I make a work placement of the necessary techniques for a good and fast implementation, from technical learning exercise repetitive and daily ices, as well as the elaboration of a plan that involves their daily chores. I've had great teaching experiences since I've been teaching. I teach students the basics and then work on their own music. This keeps the student interested, keeping them wanting to practice. I believe practice is the key to success. I also teach music reading which helps the student to learn how to see music on the page. I have three steps to success. 1) drum rudiments, we focus on the rudiments which gives the student a better understanding on how to play the drums. 2) I focus on reading which give the student more confidence when playing 3) I focus on ear training which helps the student to play music that is heard while giving the student a better understanding on how to play with a group Read More

It all started when I took my first drum lesson in the 4th grade. From then on, I wanted to play whenever I could. I played in all my school bands from middle school to high school. Graduated Southern University, home of the world famous "Human Jukebox" which I was a member of for 3 years, as well as playing for my church since I was 13. Along the way I have had the honor of meeting and learning from respected musicians such as Lawrence Jackson (former director of SU Bands), Herman Jackson (Brother of Randy Jackson), Jerry Lee Lane (Marching percussion pioneer) and countless others. Began teaching when I was in college. Had a good rapport with all my students. Always tried to teach them something they can use now(like a cool beat or fill), this way they get enthusiastic and stay with it. My wife talked me into teaching again. We were at the recording studio one day but had no bass player, but my friends son was there, so I taught him the basics in 10 minutes and we recorded right after. Read More

My teaching style is very laidback yet focused. I'm still a student myself so I know that my students might not have time to practice every day, but at the same time, you've got to practice consistently to see results. I focus on trying to get those consistent results while still making sure my students have fun in the process. One of the most rewarding things about music is finally learning a song you've been trying to learn for a while or realizing how far you've come, and I know I can help my students reach that fulfilling point. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs.. Read More
