We then work on some new material (rudiments, rhythmic patterns, time signatures, etc.) and we finish off doing some fun stuff like learning new grooves or playing your favorite songs. I will always be stressing out throughout lessons the right way to practice. The keys to get as much as you can from each lesson are these: COMMIT to your goals. PRACTICE as much as you can. ALWAYS HAVE FUN while playing. Read More

I first like to get to know my student's goal whether it's just to learn to play, improve their skills, or become a professional. For a beginner I introduce the instrument, and instruct them in the basic techniques to start playing music the first day! I will then give them the instructional tools so they can feel comfortable putting their ideas into practice. I am very open to the student's musical desires, but I have found that instructional books are a great way to improve one's skills. Read More

Methods vary by experience, age, demeanor, motivation, etcetera- but in general, we will start playing music YOU want to learn. A cover or style YOU want to play. What rock song do you want to know, or Rn B song, or country song, or church song. As long as it is not too difficult or out of your current ability we will do it. Of course if your more advanced we can go from there. Read More

My musical journey started at the age of 4 years old. I started on the drums in my father's church. I went on to start playing the keyboard/piano at the age of 6, learning from great musicians along the way as I grew. At the age of 9 I started teaching vocals individually and adult and youth choirs for the next 30 years. Throughout the years while teaching, I continued enhance my performance ability by learning from great and prominent artists like Gospel Music greats like, Twinkie Clark of the Clark Sisters, Richard Smallwood, John P. I began teaching private lessons and ensemble rehearsals in 1999, having since taught everything from elementary music and concert band to marching band and college-level drum corps. I love it all, as it's all about sharing the positive experience of performance and excellence with the next generation of musicians. In addition to teaching instrumental skills and technique, I also enjoy coaching music theory and composition, and often encourage students to bring in their own compositions to review or perform. I like to use custom lesson plans. I evaluate the student's playing and ask what they want to improve on and/or want to learn. Based off of this, I might use rhythmic study exercises from Ted Reed's "Syncopation" or hand patterns from the book "Stick Control", playing on both a practice pad and the kit. I like to have students play a simple 8th note groove, backbeat on 2 & 4 and incorporate bass drum precision exercises, eventually using different hi hat patterns. Read More

I am a firm believer in building the curriculum around the student since everyone learns differently and not everyone has the same goals. I start with an assessment to see where their skills are. I do this in 3 major categories: tempo, reading, rudiments. From there I can see what areas need to be focused on first so we can perfect the basics and have a strong foundation to build off of.
