For all students, regardless of age or skill level, I like to gauge their musical interests (i.e., what music they listen to, what inspired them to pick up the guitar, etc.), and then work from there. For someone who has never picked up an instrument before, I generally work out of Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Book 1. Once we're past that, I'll start showing them some basic songs, as well as seeing what kinds of songs they would be interested in learning. Read More

I use a variety of method books depending upon the needs, interests, and the age of the student. My vast collection of method books is an endless resource of proven pedagogical approaches that I employ in my practice. In recent years, Ive began using play along CDs that are combined with tempo controlling software so that students can slow musical excerpts down and hear themselves playing along with professional musicians. Born and raised in The Netherlands with a Spanish upbringing, I came to New York to continue pursuing a career as a musical performer and educator. I am a passionate, patient and enthiusiastic instructor who loves working with students of all ages and to realize the students full potential. Coming to Boston in 2009 to start a Bachelor of Music in Berklee College of Music, I started to perform around the greater area, including renowne stages such as the Berklee Perofrmance Centre and the Beantown Music festival.I then moved to New York City to start a Masters in Music in New York University. The books I recommend purchasing for piano students is much more dependent on their goals and level of playing. Older drum students can expect to study concepts such as The Rudimental Ritual by Alan Dawson. Older piano students can expect to study chart reading found in The Real Book. I have ideas regarding lesson plans for students but my most important goal is to understand what the student WANTS to study and help them achieve their short term and long term goals in music. My first experience with teaching dates back to high school. Our marching band needed some drummers so I offered to teach some classmates for $3 an hour! I've been teaching in music stores and privately for 25 years. My students love their lessons and usually study with me for many years. I make learning fun but also focus on developing well rounded musicians. Read More

Everyone who picks up an instrument is not going to tour the world as a musician. While this is true, every student can play and be proud. It is my job to help students progress and reach that level. I like to keep lessons light in attitude, but still put responsibility on my students. Work outside of lessons is a must for progress, even if only ten minutes is all that is possible. One of my goals is to show students how to reflect on whatever work they are doing and tell for themselves whether it is good work or not. Read More

Brent started playing on pots and pans as a child and then moved to the drum set at the age of 8 with instruction from his two older brothers. He joined the school band and performed drum solos for entertainment at school events. Soon it became evident that being a drummer was his calling. Brent received his degree from Berklee College Of Music as a scholarship student and performed with many musicians in the Boston area. Read More
