I then received my Masters of Arts in Music Education along with New York state certification for grades Pre-K through 12th grade. The year I graduated with my masters I was hired to work for the New York city Department of Education teaching general music and Band to grades Pre-K through eighth grade. I loved teaching, but I knew I wanted to learn more, which brings me to where I am now. Read More

I like to take a holistic approach in teaching beginners by incorporating Technique, Ear Training, Music Theory, and Improvisation right from the start. This allows the student to quickly be able to learn songs by ear and write their own music. For more advanced and older students, I prefer to see where they are in their first lesson and hear what their goals are. Some people do not care if they can read music or not and that is totally cool! Read More

I love to interact with students and help them achieve their personal goals. As mentioned previously, I believe its really important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this concept by working to set achievable goals for my students. Also I work to better understand and find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. There are certain ideas and concepts that generally apply to all musical styles and I do try to introduce these in a variety of ways based on the student. Read More

Effective music education is both developmentally and culturally appropriate: By working with the student to understand their interests, I hope to provide them with an experience that will enrich their musical and social life outside of the work we do together. Through infancy, I believe Music Learning Theory is effective for developing musical and linguistic skills. If a student in toddlerhood/childhood shows that they have a preferred way to express themselves musically, I will tailor lessons around the Kodaly (voice), Orff (instrumental), or Dalcroze (dance) philosophies. I began teaching music while I was in high school to younger students. Once I began college, I discovered that I really enjoyed teaching music and had a gift for verbally communicating complex musical ideas in an easy fashion. After moving to New York, I opened my own private studio and began teaching full time. I have experience teaching people of all ages and experience levels; ranging from beginners, to college students, to professionals, and I love all of it. Read More

I place a lot of importance on my students knowing HOW to make the sound they want to make, not merely on imitation. I desire for you to play and form your own style, which is strong and impressive without any manipulation. My training comes from my experience studied as an orchestral percussionist and drumset player, but you'll find that these techniques are applicable to effective playing in all styles and genres. I like to think of myself as a teacher that suits the student's needs. And since every one has a different way of playing an instrument, I will build a specific "curriculum" for each student. I am not a strict sort of teacher, I like to talk about what we are learning, show musical examples, play examples and generally just have a good flow in class. The most important thing is to learn that playing an instrument should be a fun, entertaining learning experience. Read More
