For beginning students I would start off with form, posture, and technique. These point are extremely important and sometimes skipped over so developing good performance habits right away is essential. I would also start them with the basics of reading treble clef and learning where the notes on the staff translate to on the neck. They would be walking away from their first lesson with a one octave C major scale and some short, repetitive exercises to get them ready for their first song. Read More

For beginners I usually start them off with two books, Stick Control and Funky Primer. I then pair what they learn from those with real world examples and try to incorporate that into songs that they want to play. For more intermediate students we focus more on developing their musical vocabulary and all around versatility. We go more in depth on rudiments and using them around the kit. We also start covering music industry fundamentals and the skills they need to market themselves as a musician and how to put together or find a band to start gigging with! Read More

Most important to my teaching is that each student to listens to a lot of music, and learns to play the music that they love as soon as possible. I work with a variety of method books/videos depending on skill level and stylistic interest, and teach time-tested regimens for building raw ability on the instrument. I also have many exercises of my own invention that are fun to listen to and play, while still remaining challenging and building facility. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding to have students develop a compassion for the music that is played. Whether it is for family, friends or playing in front of a large audience. I think it is important for students to practice what is taught but not to overwhelm them. Music that they play whether it is for a recital or an audition should be an exciting and fulfilling experience and not feel like it is something that is overwhelming. Read More

Previously mentioned, depending on the individual student, my methods and concepts will change. In teaching i have found there is NOT a "perfect way to teach" or "right way". People are different and everyone learns differently and at different paces, so the style of teaching has to change from student to student. However, the biggest principal i have seen in teaching lessons, is if the teacher believes in the student, and the student knows it, results will sky rocket and the student will do anything for that teacher. For beginning students I begin by talking to them about music and what songs they like. We start clapping along and picking out what the drums are doing and eventually begin playing along. A wonderfully laid out book for beginners that are interested in pop music is "The Funky Primer." I also like to teach the reading of rhythms out of a book by Ted Reed called "Syncopation for the Modern Drummer." This is a great book that you can work out of for many many years to come. For beginner students who are children, I will typically start with Bastien Piano Elements and/or Piano Adventures. Additionally, I'll incorporate popular musical melodies in EZ plays and have my students begin learning chords so they can begin lead sheet reading some of their favorite tunes. For adults, I'll cater the lesson to what they are looking to accomplish and keep them engaged, learning and continue having fun in their musical element. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
