I started teaching private lessons in high school, for free, to other students in the percussion section of both the concert and marching bands. Shortly after starting as a music major at Asbury Univeristy I continued to teach lessons. During my collegiate years I also was involved in taking private lessons and playing for all available percussion-needed ensembles (concert band, jazz band, orchestra, etc.). Ever since high school, I have enjoyed teaching other students. In college, I would travel to nearby schools to tutor middle and high school instrumental students. My first job out of college was teaching at a charter school where I saw all the students in the school for 9 week periods. We established an after school band where private lessons were the main form of growth. In my next job, I taught students from beginning, in sixth grade, through their senior year of high school. Reading is my main way of getting things into perspective. I originally learned by ear, it paid off for live situation but, reading is where I found the most connection. To see a student who has a serious passion for music grow from not knowing anything about the piano or drums to making music is probably one of the most fulfilling feelings I could have.
