My name is Alex L., and I've been playing the drums for 10 years with 3 years of teaching experience. I have taught independently and in academies, and currently, I play in an up-and-coming band called Walking Down Main based out of the Detroit metro area. I am deeply passionate about music and aspire to inspire others through teaching and performing. We have played all around the Detroit area in the last two years and have also performed in some cities in Ohio and looking forward to venturing out even further. Read More

Depending on the instrument I am instructing on I will take each student on their own path. I typically spend some time getting to know the student, understand their desires and passions for music, and their own personal style. When I understand that I can gauge where the lessons should go. The first few lessons typically cover the basics of the instrument and a "get to know you" setting. Of course I always try to give the student some form of "homework" or things to practice. Read More

My experience is derived from my work as an instructor at an Ann Arbor music school. I have taught a wide range of ages, and enjoy every age I teach for different reasons. I believe everyone has something new to offer. I have played in punk, rock, and ska bands, as well as playing with certain groups at the music school. I have planned and orchestrated a summer camp and run rehearsals on a weekly basis, with groups of young kids, so I can definitely handle kids of any age. Read More

I like to take a global approach to teaching percussion. The things that can be learned by playing on a pad with drumsticks can be transferred to other instruments such as Marimba, Timpani, and Multiple-Percussion. I find it essential to teach students good fundamentals in order for them to progress without having to fix bas habits. I also like to curb my lessons to fit what each student needs. When planning my lessons, I like to assess the student and build their weaknesses up first, while praising them for their strengths and taking them to the next level. Read More

One of things I that I find discouraging is when teachers stick with one method. Every student is different! As a result, my method of teaching very much depends on the student. If I have a student who is struggling with fundamentals, then we will focus on fundamentals. If I have a student who is struggling with articulations, then we will focus on articulations in lessons. My lessons are very much tailored to the wants and needs of the students. Read More

For beginning drum students I utilize the Ludwig Drum Method. It's the same book that I studied in as a beginning drum student. All students are required to have a copy of George Lawrence Stone's Stick Control. This is considered "The Bible" of drum method books and is essential for study no matter what the student's skill level is. For intermediate drum set lessons I work out of Peter Erskine's Drumset Essentials. Every student is required to study and be proficient with the 13 Essential Drum Rudiments, which are the building blocks of drumming ( just like scales are for melodic instruments) . Read More
