The most satisfying moment as a teacher is when a student finally "gets it", and for students, I find that lessons are the most fun when the student feels capable and not overwhelmed. I like to challenge my students and encourage them to exceed even their own expectations of their abilities. I like to show videos of high level playing and introduce a wide variety of genres and styles while I find exactly what it is that inspires the student to play. My lesson structure normally consists of a warm up, rudiment/sticking work, reading or playing exercise and new concepts, then work on a song. As far as books go, I prefer the Hal Leonard method, especially for beginner musicians. I combine visual, audio and kinesthetic learning methods to tailor to anyone's needs. As stated above, I adapt to each student and each type of music's needs. Orally, aurally, and any methods visually, including reading music, drawings, etc, I teach in a way that reaches the student at their level of ability or aptitude. I usually do NOT use books, sheet music, or anything written, other than the notes and illustrations I provide and any notes that the student wishes to take.
