I firmly believe that no student is "too young" to learn about more advanced music and techniques. With that being said, I will also push my students to move to the next level. I set very attainable goals that all students of any age can reach, while always adding a little more. Again, this is all related to the students understanding of rhythm and their relationships to each other. No matter the instrument, I always look for the new and "cool" music and teaching styles to keep up with the rapidly changing world. Read More

My teaching style is, "teaching to enable reaching". Growing up, there was a specific way of learning that got me to understand the lessons being taught to me. I believe in learning the student's methods, before teaching the student what may not work for them. I individualize what needs to be taught, even when teaching in a group atmosphere. Read More

What are the parents'/guardians' musical backgrounds? What has the student learned/is currently learning via another teacher (most likely a band director)? For the beginning drum set student, I start by establishing a fundamental understanding of rhythm and reading rhythm before transitioning directily to drum set. This way, when the student sits down at a drum set, they can focus on the using multiple limbs without struggling with understanding and/or fundamental rhythms. Read More

The way I've always approached music and teaching is with a sense of humilty and thanks. It is a true joy to be able to pass on the knowledge and lessons I've learned throughout my experience to those who are excited and passionate. To communicate the artistry of great songwriters, composers and performers, past and present, is both a privilege and a challenge. With that in mind, I set realistic goals for my students by teaching basic fundamental techniques and applying them to repertoire that is fun, recognizable, expressive and practical. Read More

As a multi-instrumentalists, I use a cross disciplinary approach even when a student is only learning one instrument. I do make use of method books for beginners, and the specific book depends upon the instrument, but I have my own methods and materials which I utilize in my lessons. Building a repertoire is encouraged, and I use the material to assist in instructing in theory and musical communication. My students are taught to be self-sufficient, by way of practice, study, and cultivating an "ear." Read More
