My teaching experience dates back to showing simple rock grooves to the kids at my fathers church. I had very little knowledge about music back then but I knew from early on that I had a niche for teaching. During my time at Rutgers University I was priveleged enough to work for the Rutgers Extension Division which specializes in different lesson and summer programs. I am a professional drummer/composer/educator living in NYC. I grew up in Dallas, Texas and began playing classical piano at age 4. I was given a drumset when I was 9 and switched to drums full time when I was 11. After high school, I attended University of North Texas to pursue a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Performance. I like to give the students the tools to become their own teachers. As their private teacher, my goals are threefold: firstly, to help them build an understanding of the fundamentals of their instrument, including relevant techniques, posture, etc. Secondly, to help them build an understanding of musical concepts and of musicianship in general, including melody, harmony, rhythm, basic theory, etc. Thirdly, to help them cultivate a vibrant practice and playing program, including optimizing fun while practicing otherwise dry material, scaffolding their learning to extrapolate on what they already know, and giving them the tools to improve and develop with or without a teacher. Again, the most important thing about learning any instrument is to have fun! If it's not fun, you won't continue to work hard at improving. That doesn't necessarily mean that I am not "tough" on a student. I think it is important to be honest and hold students accountable. However, I belive in celbrating all of the "wins" in life, no matter how small they may be. Later my first formal teaching job took place in Musicians Institute as Teacher's Assistant. I've been a member of the Los Angeles City College advisory board in 1999 and I've thought as a full time teacher at Istanbul Bilgi University Music Department from 2000 to 2008.
