Not only do I teach students how to play or create music, but also how to successfully set goals and achieve them. Every musician should have a goal in mind when practicing. Learning how to manage that goal can be tricky. I like to work together with students to take their goals and break them down smaller into more manageable pieces for them to master. Typically, I first like to have the student play something they want to play for me - anything they know or like to play! From here, I can take that information and use it to form a plan and we can address fundamentals or skills that need to be worked on. I firmly believe that fundamentals are incredibly important to playing the instrument at the highest level. I encourage my students to be technically proficient, musically literate, and good listeners. Having these core fundamentals down prepares my students to be able to play any style of music they choose. Lessons are always customized to fit the musical preferences of the student.  I use my preferred method books but am able to incorporate the books the student already owns within the lesson plans.  I encourage the use of technology such as smartphones, iPads, and play-a-longs as teaching aids. Weekly 45 minute lessons focus on tone production, technique, theory, and musicianship through exercises, etudes, solos, and duets.  Students are always welcome to bring in music they are interested in working on, whether for school, contest, or just for fun. I welcome students of all ages and abilities who are inquisitive, persistent, hard working, and who put forth their best efforts during lessons and weekly practice. I am passionate a motivated while also being able to teach all levels of saxophone and clarinet. I have both a Bachelor of Music from the University of Oregon and a Master of Music from the University of Wyoming in Saxophone Performance. I have played both saxophone and clarinet for over twenty years. I have taught privately and in group lessons at the novice, intermediate and collegiate levels.
