I love to keep the lessons engaging and fun, sometimes I like playing duets or just sight read for fun. I'm a professional jazz saxophonist and composer who has lived in New York and performed around the world for 15 years. I began playing sax when I was 9 years old and quickly developed an interest in jazz. I started playing my first gigs at around 14 and decided to devote my life to the saxophone and music. I received a Bachelor of Music from NYU in jazz saxophone performance. Some of the highlights of my performing career have included concerts in Italy, Russia and Brazil, as well as performances at Lincoln Center and the Village Vanguard in New York. Read More

For beginning students, what I start with generally depends on what instrument they play, but in general, I use various "Essentials" books. As the student progresses past the fundamentals of music and playing their instrument, I will move on to more advanced or technical musical exercises, as well as solo repertoire if the student is looking to perform for a recital, NYSSMA, etc. My teaching style for older, more advanced students is relatively the same, excluding the "Essentials" and fundamentals. I use what some have called the target approach. With this method you are working on one concept at a time, and you should always have one concept in mind while you practice. Some examples of beginning concepts are 1) keeping a steady beat, 2) sound quality, or 3) smooth finger technique. In one practice session using the target approach you may spend 10 minutes on target 1) and 15 minutes on target 2). What is important, however, is that you continue to work on a target every day until you find yourself performing that single concept flawlessly and effortlessly. Read More
