I am from Dallas, Texas but moved to Pittsburgh to study with Michael Rusinek of the Pittsburgh Symphony. I received my Bachelor of Music in Music Education with Teacher Certification in Texas from Southern Methodist University and my Master of Music and Advanced Music Studies Certificate from Carnegie Mellon University. I have performed in many regional orchestras in the Pittsburgh area as well as with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. In 4th grade I got a recorder and from then on I've soaked up all the music experiences around me. I fondly remember my first solo performance was 5th grade, and my first honor band was that summer. By my senior year of high school I had been involved in a couple dozen honor bands/choirs/orchestras including an amazing tour of Europe in a 200 person band! I believe that fundamentals are the most important, and these should always be a focus. However, I also understand that you play an instrument to have fun as well. I believe that there should be a mixture of hard work and play, and will often assign fundamental exercises combined with solo or duet material. For all experience levels, long tones are essential to a good playing foundation. Making long tones a regular part of daily practice is key to developing a strong sound and extended lung capacity. Beginners focus on embouchure, hand position, correct fingerings, note reading, and basic rhythms. Intermediate and advanced players work on learning major and minor scales, etude studies and a variety of solo clarinet repertoire. The curriculum that I use varies according to the various orchestral instruments, singing or piano, and of course according to the levels of ability. I work with many different technique books and workbooks to teach music notation and reading.Within 3-6 months, my students will be reading notes, understanding rhythms both complex and simple, and playing and singing anything from classical to Pop to Broadway and even writing and recording (I am a recording producer as well)their own songs, if they choose!
