At home during the summers, I was a clarinet instructor at Lyons Township High School’s summer band programs for junior high students. When I moved to Chicago in 2015 to begin my graduate studies at DePaul, I continued teaching through Musika and DePaul’s Community Music Division. I’m currently preparing to begin my third year on faculty at The People’s Music School, where I teach private lessons, group classes, music theory, and chamber music to students ranging from elementary beginners to advanced high schoolers at multiple sites throughout Chicago. I began my musical career playing clarinet and saxophone for the Marine Forces Pacific Band in Honolulu, Hawaii. While serving, I was the concertmaster, clarinet section leader, and leader of the woodwind quintet for a combination of 300+ performances around the world. My method of teaching is based in the standard pedagogy of scales and chords(arpeggios). Those who are beginner and intermediate I usually start with the Rubank series of method books as well as easy to play popular tunes. For those who are at the advanced level I would teach out of the Baermann method book in addition to the Rose studies as well as Kroepsch, Jean-Jean, and Rode. For beginning students I believe it's important for them to begin playing the first day. I get the students to make their first sound and teach the technique and theory as they learn their instrument. For beginning voice students I use the same method, but I like to use a song that the student knows. While living in Japan I had the opportunity to present masterclasses in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture, teaching using only Japanese language. This experience taught me the value of words, and also the importance of ensuring that students are able to comprehend all discussed material. Last year, I was invited to teach a masterclass in Seoul, Korea, working with Choongheon Lee, Principal Clarinet of the CheongJu City Symphony. Throughout my teaching career, I have had students succeed in All-District Band, All-District Orchestra, All-State Honors Band, and some to continue as Clarinet Performance Majors. Read More
