I generally rely on Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for Strings books when teaching beginners. These are great for building fundamentals on the instrument and introducing students to reading music. I supplement this with scales and the first Suzuki cello book, for an introduction to learning repertoire. As the student advances, we eventually shed the Essential Elements books in favor of various etudes books, depending on the student's needs. From a family of musicians, I started playing the cello at the age of 5. After being a cellist for the Conservatory of Quebec Orchestra in Saguenay, I switched to percussion. I recorded the Flight of the Bumble Bee for the first time at age 14 and became a symphonic percussionist later with the National Art Center Orchestra of Canada as well as for the Ottawa Symphony while playing for the Starlighters and Savoy Swing Band at the Penguin cafe in Ottawa. Once the student has grasped the basic fundamentals and note reading, I begin to introduce solo repertoire from the Suzuki String method. Along with technical studies and solo repertoire, the student will learn scales ranging from one to four octaves. For beginning piano student's, I use the Bastein Piano series.
