I began teaching private voice when I was in college and also started to teach beginning piano and cello as I played piano for 10 years prior. I have always loved teaching as it is a chance for me to help students find their true voice through honing skills and proper technique allowing them to have healthy and lengthy careers in the industry if they so choose. I always meet you where you are, so if you are just beginning singing then we start with the basics to make sure you have a good core to start with, if you are more advanced I like to learn what you know so far so nothing seems repetitive for you and I then incorporate techniques that will help you move to the next level. My first teaching experience comes from the high school years. My teacher asked me to cover him for a couple weeks with beginner students (6-9 years old kids). Then when I graduated from high school and started my Bachelors, I began to work as a part-time teacher. After that, while earning my Master's, I began a teaching assistantship. Read More

If a student finds they do not like the music we are studying, we can easily find something we like! I feel it is important to address a wide range of skills and abilities in private lesson setting. I believe that, regardless of background, experience, skill set, or talent, music is a fabulous setting for fostering teamwork. I strive to recognize the strengths whether this be performance, aural skills, or even music appreciation! Read More

My first experience teaching was during the summer when I began instructing swim lessons for the town pool. I quicly began to seek out a way to teach music before I was in college and built a small studio of beginner cellists in my home town. I also began performing in both classical and other styles during this time, something I continue to do today. The reason I continued to understand more about teaching was because I loved to give back what I had learned from the great people in my life. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and incorporate Position Pieces for Cello by Rick Mooney as they progress to higher levels of difficulty. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

I've been a full-time music teacher and performer in the late 1970s. I've studied with some of the top teachers in the world including Aaron Shear at NC School of Arts who I helped publish his last series of books with Mel Bay. As well as teaching college level guitar and music courses, I have taught an average of 70 students a week for 15 years during the 1990s and early 2000s. Read More
