During the first lesson, I have a short discussion with the student to see what their goals are. I also ask what about music interests them. I then ask them to perform anything of their choice to assess their ability level (if applicable). After that, I tell them what immediately needs to be addressed and how this will work with their longterm goal. For beginning students who are children, for the first lesson i usually ask them to play whatever they have in hand then base on the standard to assign basic practice from the Suzuki cello books. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

As the student learns the fundamentals I gradually add scales and exercises to further develop the student's technique. After further progress, I begin to introduce solo repertoire and add other pieces. I love cultivating an environment for young ones that both excites them and keeps them learning as much material as possible from the get-go. Young students are incredibly smart and spongey and I love learning from my own students the growth and knowledge that is actually possible to cultivate in young students.
