I encourage my students to experience all styles of music, classical, pop, blues,country, rock etc. so they can create their own music. I teach students to sight read their music. For beginning students I require a guitar methods book. Young students like to accomplish finishing books and I find this is a useful means to measure accomplishment. It is important to me that my student learn the basic fundamentals and after they have grasped the concept and proved and understanding I introduce them to different styles to using the guitar pick.  In essence it helps to build basic musical vocabulary using skills they already have, but may not know that they have them.  For intermediate, advanced, and older students in general I have a more flexible approach that is based upon their goals or lack thereof.  For all students I always emphasize knowledge of music theory and real life application of their musical education toward realizing their own musical goal or dream, as humble or as grand as it may be. Music Club was where it all started; from there, I branched out into private lessons, starting with my peers, and later working with references and other community members who heard I was making rounds. In college, in addition to private lessons, I also began teaching grade school classes at a nearby school. These classes were more focused on understanding the basics of rhythm, harmony, melody, and how they interact - what makes music sound good to our ears, and how to use those things for creative self-expression.
