As I have taught for many years, I feel encouraged and motivated when I can pass along my love for music. Nothing is more inspiring to me than to see someone's face light up when they pick up their instrument and learn. I set tailored goals for my students to reach every week, so that they have specific targets to reach. Positive reinforcement is the key to keeping a motivated student, and I encourage them in anyway possible making myself available to them throughout the week even after the lesson is over. Read More

My experience begins immediately out of college. I gave private music lessons for many years. Soon I began concentrating on playing at the professional level in the Pocono Mountains where I lived. I was in several successful bands with Mickey Day, John Murphy, Spencer Reed, and Ed Ludwig along with others. I returned to teaching when I found a studio in Hackettstown, New Jersey to continue giving private lessons. I gave lessons there for approximately 20 years. Read More

I have been playing andteaching in the Baltimore - Washington area since 1977,and have performed for the Smithsonian Institution, the Governor of Marylandand the White House. These experiences, along with my education courses, helped shape the way I teach. Every student is different, which is why I love customizing a long term plan that is right for THEM. Helping to fulfill a student's dream is a satisfaction that never grows old, and it is always a thrill when a student masters a musical challenge! Read More

Modern life is very busy and full of distraction. For many of us, daily life in particular is also filled with lots of obligations, which can drain us of our creative energy. Experience with hundreds of students over decades has shown me that when the music lesson becomes just another part of that sense of obligation, it produces negative outcomes. I've always felt that the music lesson should provide a respite from this, while still helping students to pursue their musical interests and develop their abilities to the fullest of their potential. Music is supposed to be fun. I love to incorporate actually playing music as much as possible and keep exercises to a minimum. This keeps lessons fresh and gives them a sense of progression. I’m laid back as a person and put that in my teaching but I am focused and consistent. I was a beginner at one time as well and understand the frustrations of beginning a new instrument. Read More

As far as books go, I prefer the Hal Leonard method, especially for beginner musicians. I combine visual, audio and kinesthetic learning methods to tailor to anyone's needs. After the basics are taught or they're already learned, I assess the student's level and teach the student what they wish to learn to the best of my ability. Read More
