If I am teaching children, I will mostly focus on fundamentals and developing finger strength or coordination for the instrument. I will try to instill the foundations of music while attempting to make it fun and interesting. If the student is an adult or has more skill level, I will let the student dictate the direction we go in, based on their desired skill level and interest. I am deeply interested by all genres and styles of music and I try to follow where the excitement is. Read More

Working for a local drum teacher in 2005, I started teaching private music lessons in students' homes. From there, I took up residence at a local music store where I taught guitar, ukulele, bass, harmonica, songwriting, and music theory for the next fifteen years. During the pandemic, I added teaching virtually to my repertoire and have fallen in love with it. Personally, I started playing music because I loved exploring and learning more about the music I I was already listening to--and I desperately wanted to learn how I could create my own sounds. I always try to make our lessons less like a lecture and more like a jam session. When analyzing a piece of music, I strive to relay the importance of knowing exactly what you're playing. Through this, the student gains a deeper appreciate for the piece and music in general, as opposed to just cycling through a chord progression. Most lessons consist of 1/3 technique and scales, and 2/3 repertoire. I always make sure to ask the students about what they like to listen to most because that will dictate which songs we learn during our lessons to make it more fun and relatable for them. Read More

In the first lessons with beginning students I always try to focus in having a good time doing music and not geting frustrated quickly. Music is not an esay thing when we start to learning it and for sure that students are going to have difficulties at the beginning. But, if they are conected with the enjoyment, they are going to overcome obstacles more easily. For advanced students, I divide the lesson in two parts: technique on the instrument and repertorire. I also like to ask a lot of questions as a way to solidify concepts, so I'll say things like, "What other chord do you know that has these notes?" and so on. When people are forced to work out their problems' solutions themselves it prevents them from disengaging from the learning process, and there's nothing more rewarding than a student's face when they just figured something out all by themselves. The first thing I ask a student is what kind of music they enjoy. What we love to hear is almost always what we want to play. As someone with ADHD I completely understand and empathize with students who have a difficult time focusing and a different way of understanding a concept. Taking a breath and a stretch can sometimes be the best cure for learner's block. Pointing out real progress is one of the best way to fuel the desire to learn more and is itself a reward! Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
